The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has warned Filipino workers in Macau to be wary of illegal recruiters offering jobs in mainland China.
POEA said in an advisory that Filipino workers should be careful of accepting offers of jobs in other countries.
“POEA warns both Filipino workers and tourists looking for work in Macau to be cautious in accepting offers from other Filipinos for supposed employment in China,” it said.
The advisory was issued after POEA received a report from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs that a domestic worker in Macau had been recruited by a fellow Filipino named Pia Ciabacal to work in Beijing.
The maid was promised a monthly salary of 7,500 yuan (US$1,180). However, upon her arrival in mainland China, she did not receive the promised salary for her services and her phone and passport were confiscated.
POEA said Filipinos who wish to work abroad should only approach accredited recruitment agencies. “For their own protection, applicants [for] overseas jobs should only transact with licensed recruitment agencies in the Philippines,” it said.
POEA also said working in a third country after already being deployed overseas was illegal.
“Recruitment through a third country is considered illegal recruitment if neither the recruiter nor the employer has proper authorization from the Philippine government,” it said.
