Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi opened the Indira Canteen in Bangalore on Wednesday, a program through which the Karnataka government will offer people low-cost food.

Breakfast will cost Rs5, while lunch and dinner will be Rs10.

The scheme is modeled on the popular Amma canteens that were introduced by former chief minister Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu. The Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka announced the canteens in this year’s state budget.

PTI reported that it was initially named Namma Canteen but later changed to Indira Canteen, as the “Congress legislators sought to give a political touch to the populist announcement ahead of the Assembly polls early next year.”

It also said that Rs100 crore (US$156,000) was earmarked in the budget to set up such canteens in 198 Bangalore wards.
