Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M Karunanidhi, who was admitted to the Kauvery Hospital on Wednesday morning, underwent a minor procedure and was discharged soon after, PTI reported.

In a statement, hospital executive director S Aravindan said the 93-year-old former chief minister was admitted for a “minor procedure – change of PEG [percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy] tube.”

In December, Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital following breathing trouble and underwent a PEG, a procedure that involves the placing of a flexible feeding tube into the stomach through the abdominal wall. The tube allows nutrition, fluids and medications to go directly into the stomach, bypassing the mouth and oesophagus, the report said.

Addressing the media, Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi said the tube had to be replaced once every six months and that her father was fine.
