A 20-year-old woman is in critical condition after being raped and thrown off the fourth-floor balcony of an under-construction building in New Delhi on Friday night, according to media reports.
A man in his early twenties who accompanied the victim and two of her friends on a night out has been arrested. However, family members of the victim, a junior chef at a five-star hotel in New Delhi, said they suspected that others were involved, PTI reported.
The victim has not yet been able to make a statement to police about the attack, which took place in the Begumpur area in Rohini, odue to her condition.
The police said officers stopped the suspect, the victim and her friends when they were traveling towards Connaught Place on a motorcycle. Police seized the bike because he did not have documents for it. The Hindustan Times reported that the four then hailed an auto-rickshaw. According to her friends, around 10.50pm, the accused asked them to wait in the auto and took her to fetch his father’s car. Around 11.10 pm, locals saw the partially-disrobed victim hitting the ground and raised the alarm.
Police believe that the suspect forced himself on the woman and pushed her off the balcony when she resisted, according to the Hindustan Times.
It reported that the victim protested and threatened to inform the police before she was pushed off the balcony. She was admitted to the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini.
The suspect has been charged with rape, kidnapping and assault.
New Delhi is known as the rape capital of India, with 2,199 cases being registered in 2015 alone.
