India’s central government has made the presentation of an Aadhaar – a 12 digit unique-identity number issued to all Indian residents based on their biometric and demographic data – mandatory when registering a death, according to media reports. The policy will apply to death certificates for citizens of all states except Jammu and Kashmir starting on October 1.

On Friday, the government said in a statement: “In a notification issued today the RGI, Ministry of Home Affairs has said the use of Aadhaar for the applicants of death certificate will result in ensuring accuracy of the details provided by the relatives, dependents or acquaintances of the deceased. It will provide an effective method to prevent identity fraud. It will also help in recording the identity of the deceased person.”
