Flooding claims 76 lives, PM oversees relief operation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reviewed the flood situation in Assam, where 76 people were reported killed.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Saraband Sonowal welcomed Modi at Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, and he then flew to the Veterinary College Ground at Khanapara in an air force helicopter.

Modi held a series of meetings with top officials at the Assam Administrative Staff College focusing on how to best tackle the flood situation and conduct relief operations. Modi was also slated to hold talks with Sonowal on flood management and damage control. He also planned to hold a meeting with the chief ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur,  and Nagaland.

The central government on Monday announced a payment of Rs2 lakh (US$3,200) for the families of those killed.
